Tang Yuan Syrup

Tang yuan is a traditional Chinese dessert enjoyed at Lunar New Year. It consists of glutenous rice balls served with a sweet ginger syrup, which families come together to roll by hand. The perfect tang yuan spheres symbolise unity and harmony, and the hope that loved ones will stay connected throughout the coming year.

This recipe makes the perfect ginger syrup to serve the with tang yuan, using Mizkan Honteri.

  • 20ml Mizkan Honteri
  • 20 tang yuan balls
  • 80g ginger (bruised)
  • 500ml water
  • 160g palm sugar / brown sugar
  • 20ml Honteri
  1. For the syruo, simmer the ginger, water, sugar, and Mizkan Honteri for 15 minutes.
  2. In a separate pot, boil tang yuan until they float (2–4 minutes).
  3. Transfer the cooked tang yuan into serving bowls and ladle the ginger syrup over.
